Grumpy Dragon

Hello everyone!

2 posts in the same week... whats happening??

A friend and I have started giving each other subjects to draw once a week. This weeks subject was "Dragon" so needless to say I drew a dragon. My initial sketch had a little girl sitting on his head but I decided to leave her out and make this more of a character concept... Also been trying to improve my painting skills. I was happy that I didn't need to use the contrast tool in this painting as I usually do... I think my eyes must be tuning into values more - at last! haha

Oh twas painted in the Gimp, I spent a few hours today on it... maybe 5? not sure.

Anyway thanks to everyone for visiting and for the kind words.

Ken :D

Lovely dragon. It definitely looks much better without the dragon rider. Though, I've personally got a thing against purple dragons :)

haha...great stuff my friend! I do like the original sketch though with the little girl and goofier face...but either way it turned out sweet.

aw man, couple of quality posts here, dragon is cool, like the spotty ears and opaque wings. Beautiful painting style as usual, the weekly theme is something my mates and i have been trying to go with also, and it seems to kick our asses into posting more, so good times!

Great dragon! I have to agree with Rawls, you should throw in the little girl from the sketch if you get a chance. Regardless it is lots of fun, tons of character in this little fella.

VERY nicely done! Amazing colors, you are getting so good and I see the improvements. I like the concept with the girl on his head, maybe you can do a second version of it, just for kicks :)

great recent posts! Nice lighting on this one. And thanks for the progress shots. I love how the kid character makes an early appearance, and immediately gets cut. I do that all the time with my stuff.

You should totally call him 'The Droggin' since he's a Scots dragon, aye?

Liking the step by step there - evolutionary.

Nice job! Thanks for sharing your work flow.

I must admit that I've also enjoyed (a bit more of) your initial sketch with the girl on top of the dragon's head. However moving on to more important matters, I don't believe anyone has mentioned this, but sir, that dragon reminds me of a very older version of Spyro. haha.

Hey Ken,

Cool dragon!

Also, I gotta say, I really like your Avatar...what software did you use to create it? Photoshop?

Love this dragon!!!!

Very nice painting - it's funny what you should say about the contrast - I always paint mine really washed out and have to add contrast later. Looking at the various stages I most like the dragon when it's a bit looser - 2 or 3 stages after the background goes grey.
