Grim Reaper

Hello!

Well last week Sean chose the subject "Grim Reaper" for our little sketch challenge, and here is my incomplete submission. Its incomplete because I'm not happy with it - I think I wanna start over, its not really the direction I had envisioned. Perhaps I would like to be a little more cartoony...

Below is the initial sketch I did for it!

Also... on Sunday there, by sheer coincidence, I was able to meet with two extremely talented caricature artists, Craig Rogalski and Paul Moyse when they joined the sketch group for the day here in Dundee.

I must say it was a pleasure to meet them both, their work is an inspiration and I picked up a lot of tips from our meeting. Also, Paul did this caricature of me, which he kindly let me rip out his sketch book...

Its awesome! Cracked me up when I saw it. I was wearing a Wallace and Gromit tshirt at the time hence the Gromit...

Anyhoo, check out their blogs.

Im awa fur noo! Cheers!

Ken :D

haha...deathly cool man! Love the sketch, and his face in the coloured version is great. As for the sketch of you...I think every pic I see of you gets further from my vision of your likeness.

I like your Grim Reaper. Hope to see you finish it soon. Can't wait to see it!

Now where do I get a Wallace and Gromit t shirt?

Hi Ken,

I really like both the sketch and the colours. You blacked out the sneakers in the coloured version, made it look a little more sinister! They look like Georgian boots. What a difference, aye?

unfinished or not.. It's still STRONG!

wow, amazing draws!!!!!!!!^^

Not finished? I think it's great! Really nice looking grim reaper, man... if the grim reaper can be called "nice looking." I might as well say flattering things about him... buy myself some time.

Cool pics. The colours look great but actually I prefer the sketch for once, though I've no idea why!

This is frustrating for me because I couldn't see the images, and I tried to open them in different windows and it didn't work out either.. I hope I can see them later..

I love that Grim Reaper! The shadows and highlights are perfect, and I'm a huge fan of your coloring style, its smooth but painterly. The initial sketch is awesome too, love the line variation and the overall design!

and in answer to your question, I dont like linetesting because it can take awhile, and also cuz sometimes you never know what mistakes await you D:

wow that's awesome anyway mate, i think a good artist ( somewhere) once said they left there work after it was done, just move to the next piece and learn from the mistakes or things you didn't like, its all about planning it out before you put the pencil down.

Just what i heard man, great work!

Hello ^^

I really love the grim reaper sketch (the colored version's just a tad too dark for me...color-wise I mean)

Are you familiar with Terry Pratchett's version of 'Death' in Discworld (As weird as it may seem, he's my favorite character)? Your reaper reminds me of him...

In the sketch...to me it looks like the reaper's grinning...and yes, the sneakers are excellent...and there's this whimsical sort of darkness to it that I often associate with Tim Burton's work...I'm not telling you what direction to take it in but I'd love to see a more light-hearted approach to the subject of the 'grim' reaper (who really as a sketch doesn't appear grim at all).

And in an act of shameless self-promotion on my part...

Visit my new blog?

It's for a Multimedia assignment of mine and I need people to look at the images and comment...I understand if you're too busy but you've always left such awesome comments on my other blog ^-^

Hope to hear from you ^^

dintoons said...

whew the reaper is scary! i prefer the initial sketch though, kinda sweet, and the final work could indeed have been more cartoony... ah well, what's inside of you only can be expressed, so i guess you must have a grim dark soul..
just kidding!!

thanx for the inspiration... i need to do some skelly studies of my own soon!

Pablo Pablo: Thanks dude!

Rawls: Thanks for that mate! haha I am interested to actually see what you think I look like....

Piya: Thanks! Yeh I hope I get the time to finish it or start it again soon. will see. haha wallace and gromit t shirt! I got mine years ago. Maybe you can find one online!

Kyri Kyprianou: Thanks mate! Yeh they were blacked out tho I had intended to add some highlighting. Yeh what a good idea! Georgian boots.... actually... if it was animated, in the shadows it could look like boots, then he steps into the light and reveals his converse lol. If u get what i mean

Adrian: Thanks mate! In which case, can I be lazy and call it a day on that one? haha

Mirella: Thanks Mirella!

St LEwis: Cheers! Much appreciated! hahaha, for sure, its worth a try!

Charles Goatley: Thanks mate! Yeh I think I prefer the sketch too. Hence I thought a more cartoony rendering would have been cool.

Dot: Thanks Dot, and cheers for dropping by!

Alumox: Thankyou! Much appreciated

David Benzal: Cheers matey!

Shawn Escott: Thanks Shawn! No, these days I only paint in "The Gimp" lol.. i hate that name haha

Bog Art: Dam! I hope those images are working now

Christina Dee: Thanks Christina! Much appreciated. Wow, glad you like the style, and glad its painterly - I dont like it to be tooooo smooth. Thanks for the kind words - and yeh I feel your linetesting pain... I experience that EVERY day at work hahaha

Moyse: Ditto dude! Yeh I need to get a frame for it haha. Thanks for the kind words!

The Passenger: haha I am keeping you on your toes. As for your question - its an honour for you to ask! Ask me again nearer the time. I may be very busy with work etc...

flomize: Thanks mate! cheers for dropping in. LOL!

Peter Breese: Thanks dude! Im prefering the pencil myself...

Dan Szilagyi: Cheers dude! yeh for sure, thats what I usually do haha. But I think this drawing might be worth trying the painting again. cheers!

Klil: Thanks for that. :D

Irene: Thanks! yeh I used a lot of code, mainly for image links. SImple html!

Bonaska: cheers! Yeh that man with a dog is me.... a caricature by fellow blogger moyse - check him out!

Ccarman: wow you think so? glad to hear it! thanks dude, much appreciated. :D

Chio_garu: Thanks for kind words, and the critique, I need more of that!!

Oh yeh, the terry pratchett death was kinda in my head... I mean the cartooniness of him more than anything and his personality. so maybe this can be a homage to him. you know I really agree with you and my painting doesnt convey that ungrimness which is what I wanted initially. I think I will repaint the sketch, in a more cartoony, lighthearted way. cheers for the thoughts.

I will view your blog, no worries, cheers for dropping by!

Ryan: thanks dude!

Dintoons: haha no! I dont have a grim dark soul! In fact I dont like painting such scarey subjects it give me nightmares lol! For sure, It didnt kinda turn out the way I had envisioned. I might just try again. Cheers dude, thanks for the comment!!

Tinylittlesandra: Cheers! Oh! Mick for sure, I work with Mick. So you guys went to college together? hey... Ill say this on your blog instead haha

Fabian: Hey thankyou! Glad you enjoy my blog. And thanks for subscribing! Much appreciated

Bog art: Thanks mate! Well, not sure I can do better, but I think I can do one closer to what I envisioned. SO I may try! Ah yes, I am very lucky haha

Joonasjoonas: thanks for that dude! Much appreciated!
